Third Annual Project Sticker Shock to be Held in Trumansburg

(Released July 13, 2012 at 2:14 PM.)

On July 19-22, the Community Coalition for Healthy Youth of Tompkins County once again partnered with local teens to sponsor “Project Sticker Shock” in Trumansburg and Jacksonville to coincide with the GrassRoots Festival.

Coalition members along with young people implemented “Project Sticker Shock,” a community-led campaign to change adult attitudes and behaviors about selling and providing alcohol to minors.  This public awareness campaign took place in stores in Trumansburg and Jacksonville to coincide with the GrassRoots Festival.

The orange and blue stickers were placed on beer cases with the slogan “It’s not your call- It’s the Law! It is illegal to buy or provide alcohol for anyone under 21.” Most businesses located on Main St. in Trumansburg agreed to place similar signs in their store fronts.

The Community Coalition for Healthy Youth is dedicated to educating the community and visitors to the area about the consequences of underage drinking.

The Coalition notes that it is important to know the legal perspective, but it is also important to help keep our youth safe. When adults supply alcohol to youth it sends a very mixed message.  Parents, youth, law enforcement, community members and retail stores all need to be part of the solution.
